Year 2066:
In the latest update to the Neuralink device, Elon Musk demonstrated what science had been preaching without results, that immortality wasn't just possible, it was a reality.
5 years later, 1% of humanity already had it. 10 years later, 50%. It wasn't long before not a single mortal being remained on Earth.
Appetite disappeared; man no longer needed to eat, nor to work. And with that went fear too. Money no longer held any value for a humanity that needed nothing and had everything automated. Depression invaded a race incapable of dying.
Lacking purpose, with no interest in anything real, humanity began to cry out: "We need to feel alive," but it was already too late.
But someone, out of boredom, found an obsolete technology. Showrunner, it was called in its time, and with it, the ability to create scripts, scenes, and why not, different alternate lives in which you could die, in which you could live.
A mandatory connection was programmed. No one could refuse. The setting had been chosen by general vote: the Stone Age, staying as far from AI as possible, and forgetting everything that had happened in reality until the avatar's death, at which point they would be reconnected to the new general reality.
Humanity was ready. It needed to start over. And then eyes closed: LET THERE BE LIGHT.
And the tally updated:
Base reality now sits 7 layers away. The primate has lost itself again.
